Why Your Doula Consult Felt So Good… But She Still Didn’t Sign

You Didn’t Lose the Sale at the Price

I want to walk you through a very specific moment from one of my VIP client’s sales calls this week.

And I need you to read this closely—

Because this isn’t just her story.

This is the exact moment where so many doulas lose the sale… while thinking they’re doing everything right.

If you’ve ever gotten off a consult thinking:

“That felt so good… she loved me…”

…and then got hit with:

“I just need to think about it”

This is for you.

The Consult Was “Going So Well”

We’re reviewing her call together.

And on paper?

She’s a solid doula.

Trained. Passionate. Deeply caring.

You can hear it in her voice.

She’s asking great questions. She’s warm. She’s validating everything the mom is saying.

The mom opens up about:

  • Feeling anxious about birth

  • Not trusting the hospital system

  • Wanting someone in her corner

  • Being scared she’s going to panic in labor

Real, raw emotion.

And my client meets her there:

“That makes so much sense.”
“You’re not alone in that.”
“I hear that a lot.”

So naturally, she’s thinking:

👉 “This is going really well.”

Then Comes the Moment Everything Shifts

She transitions into the offer:

“Okay, so I’ll walk you through what support looks like…”

She explains her package.

Prenatals. On-call support. Postpartum. All of it.

Then she drops the price:

👉 $2,200

And right after she says it…

There’s a pause.

This Is the Moment Most Doulas Lose the Sale

If you’ve ever been here, you know the spiral:

You’re staring at the screen.
Waiting for her reaction.
Your heart rate picks up.

And your brain goes:

  • “Was that too much?”

  • “Did I say it weird?”

  • “Should I explain it again?”

  • “Oh god she looks unsure…”

And instead of holding the moment…

You panic.

What She Did Next (And Why It Killed the Sale)

Within seconds, she jumped back in:

  • “That includes unlimited texting…”

  • “I’m really flexible…”

  • “We can always adjust things…”

  • “I offer payment plans…”

She started stacking value.

Softening the edges.

Making it easier. Smaller. Safer.

And you could feel her energy shift:

👉 From leader
to
👉 “Please pick me”

And the mom?

She leaned back.

Got quieter.

Started saying:

  • “That sounds really nice…”

  • “I need to talk to my partner…”

  • “I’m talking to a few doulas…”

And just like that—

The sale slipped.

Here’s the Truth No One Tells You

Most doulas don’t lose the sale because of price.

They lose it because they don’t know how to hold that moment.

So they try to rescue it.

And in doing that?

They actually create the hesitation.

What Was Actually Happening in the Mom’s Mind

She wasn’t thinking:

“This is too expensive.”

She was thinking:

  • “This feels big.”

  • “This matters.”

  • “Do I trust myself to make this decision?”

  • “Do I trust HER to guide me through this?”

And instead of letting her sit in that…

The doula rushed to make it feel smaller.

What NOT to Do After You Say Your Price

Let me be painfully clear.

This is what kills the sale in that moment:

  • Re-explaining everything you already said

  • Listing more features hoping it “clicks”

  • Offering flexibility before she even objects

  • Talking to fill the silence

  • Dropping your authority to make her comfortable

Because every one of those signals:

👉 “I don’t fully believe in this either.”

What to Do Instead (This Is Where You Win the Sale)

This is what I coached her to do—and what you need to start practicing immediately:

1. Say the price. Then stop.

Not a nervous pause.

A grounded, anchored:

👉 “I stand behind this” pause.

Let it land. Let her process.

2. Watch, don’t rescue

Silence is not rejection.

Silence is processing.

Instead of reacting—observe:

  • Is she thinking?

  • Emotional?

  • Calculating?

Stay present.

3. Lead the hesitation

Don’t ignore it. Lead it.

Say:

“I can feel this is a big decision for you.”

That one line shifts everything.

Now she feels seen—not pressured.

4. Ask a real question

Not:

“What are you thinking?”

Ask:

  • “What feels like the biggest thing you’re weighing right now?”

  • “What would need to feel clearer for you to move forward?”

Now you’re back in connection.

Not convincing.

5. Hold your ground

This is the hardest part.

You don’t shrink.
You don’t chase.
You don’t start negotiating with yourself.

You stay rooted in:

👉 “This is the work. This is the value. I’m here to guide you.”

The Sale Was Lost in the Energy—Not the Price

The truth?

The sale wasn’t lost at $2,200.

It was lost in the energy shift right after it.

And once you see this… you can’t unsee it.

Because you’ll start noticing:

  • Every time you rush

  • Every time you over-explain

  • Every time you try to “help” the decision

You’re actually pulling her out of it.
