Why Your Doula Business Is Stuck Under 10K Months

The Real Reason Your Doula Business Is Stuck (And How to Fix It)

There was a season in my doula business where I was stuck making about $2K a month.

And if you’ve ever been there, you know the mental spiral that comes with it.

Every morning I woke up thinking:

“I just need more births.”
“I just need more visibility.”
“I just need more confidence.”

Like confidence was some magical personality trait successful doulas were born with — and I just hadn’t unlocked it yet.

Meanwhile, I was working constantly.

And this is the part people don’t always see.

I wasn’t casually running a doula business.

I was working every chance I had.

After my son went to bed.
During naps.
On weekends.
Late at night when the house was finally quiet.

If there was a spare hour in the day, I was pouring it into the business.

Posting on Instagram.
Networking in Facebook groups.
Designing new graphics.
Tweaking my website homepage.
Lowering my prices because I thought maybe moms just needed an easier “yes.”

I was doing everything the doula industry told me to do.

And nothing was actually changing.

When I Calculated My Hourly Rate… It Was Brutal

One night I nearly lost it.

I was laying in bed with headphones in, trying not to wake my husband or toddler, and I calculated my actual hourly rate.

Because $2K a month sounds like something when you say it out loud.

But when I divided that by the hours I was working?

Late nights.
Weekends.
Research time.
Content creation.
Consults that didn’t convert.

It was brutal.

By the time I factored in continuing education, business expenses, and time invested, it didn’t even feel like I was paying myself.

It felt like the business owned me.

Not the other way around.

That’s when the doubt started creeping in.

What if this just doesn’t work for me?

What if I’m one of the doulas who loves this work deeply… but can’t actually build a sustainable business doing it?

When you're sitting at $2K months, those questions get loud.

How long can I keep doing this?
How long can my family support this?
Am I chasing something that doesn’t actually exist?

From the outside, you’re still posting.
Still showing up.
Still saying you love birth work.

But inside?

You're exhausted and discouraged.

And it’s incredibly lonely.

The Information Spiral Most Doulas Fall Into

During that time I became obsessed with learning how to grow my doula business.

I joined programs.
Bought courses.
Listened to podcasts nonstop.
Watched YouTube videos.
Downloaded every free resource I could find.

Marketing.
Sales.
Funnels.
Content strategy.
Lead generation.

If there was information about building a doula business, I consumed it.

And honestly?

The amount of time I spent researching every month was insane.

Hours and hours trying to find the answer.

Trying to find the one thing that would finally make the business work.

But what I didn’t realize then was this:

I was drowning in information and starving for clarity.

The Doula Lead Magnet Rabbit Hole

One of the biggest rabbit holes I fell into was funnels.

I spent countless hours crafting what I thought was the perfect doula lead magnet.

Designing the PDF.
Writing every page.
Tweaking the messaging.
Writing the email sequence.
Building the landing page.
Testing conversion rates.

Weeks turned into months.

Eventually I got one lead magnet to about a 30% conversion rate, which felt like a huge win at the time.

But then something discouraging happened.

My sales didn’t increase.

My email open rates were mediocre.
No one replied.
No one booked calls.

I had built this system that everyone online promised would “run in the background and bring you clients.”

But it just sat there.

Quiet.

And it was incredibly demoralizing.

The Lie I Was Living Inside My Doula Business

At the time, I believed the problem was leads.

I thought:

“If more people just find me, everything will fix itself.”

So naturally I pushed harder.

More posts.
More content.
More teaching.

But deep down I knew something wasn’t adding up.

Because the truth was…

I never had an effort problem.

I was working incredibly hard.

My real problem was misdiagnosis.

I was trying to fix the wrong thing.

And when you’re fixing the wrong thing, you can work twice as hard and stay exactly where you are.

The Question That Changed My Doula Business

Eventually I asked a different question.

Instead of asking:

“How do I get more clients?”

I started asking:

“What is actually stopping this business from growing?”

Not the symptom.

The constraint.

And when I looked honestly at my business, the answer was uncomfortable.

It wasn’t leads.

I had inquiries.
I had consults.

But my positioning wasn’t clear and my conversions weren’t strong.

Mothers liked me.

They connected with me.

Consults felt great.

But they didn’t feel absolute certainty choosing me.

So I’d hear things like:

“We’ll think about it.”

or

“We’re interviewing a few other doulas.”

or

“We’ll let you know.”

Which is basically the polite version of a no.

The 4 Doula Business Bottlenecks

After coaching hundreds of doulas, I see this pattern constantly.

When a doula is stuck under about $3K a month, there’s almost always a bottleneck.

Usually one of four.

1. Positioning

Your messaging doesn’t create certainty.

Mothers like you — but they’re not sure why they should choose you.

2. Traffic

Not enough qualified eyes are seeing your work.

3. Conversion

Consults feel good but don’t close.

4. Scaling

You’re busy… but your income doesn’t reflect it.

When you identify your bottleneck, everything becomes clearer.

What Changed Everything in My Doula Business

The jump from $2K months to $10K+ months didn’t happen because I worked more hours.

It happened because I finally understood where the business was leaking.

Once I fixed the real constraint, everything changed.

More consults.
Higher close rates.
Stronger authority.
More certainty.

Not just for me.

For the mothers hiring me too.
