How to Increase Your Doula Visibility & Leverage Social Media In Your Birth Business

I was scrolling Instagram the other day and had this moment where I thought:

“Oh my God… every doula sounds exactly the same.”

And honestly? I think that’s one of the biggest reasons so many incredible doulas are struggling to consistently book clients right now.

In this episode of the Six Figure Doula Podcast, I’m breaking down why being the “best” doula doesn’t automatically make you visible — and why emotional connection, personality, conviction, and memorability matter so much more than most birth workers realize.

I’m talking about:

  • Why I think the doula industry has an “optimization addiction”

  • How certifications and credentials can sometimes become a hiding place

  • Why moms hire doulas they FEEL connected to

  • The reason some doulas are unforgettable online while others blend into the background

  • The moment I stopped trying to sound like my mentors and finally leaned into my own voice

  • How my background in dance, sales psychology, and storytelling shaped my brand

  • Why different creates emotional memory — and emotional memory creates clients

This episode is vulnerable, bold, and probably a little uncomfortable at times… but it’s the conversation I think the birth world desperately needs.

Because your future clients cannot choose the version of you they cannot clearly see.

And they definitely cannot remember the version of you that sounds like everybody else.

I was scrolling Instagram the other day and had this moment where I thought:

“Oh my God… every doula sounds exactly the same.”

And honestly?

I think that realization explains why so many incredible doulas are struggling to consistently book clients right now.

Because the doulas getting hired over and over again are not always the “best” doulas on paper.

They’re the doulas pregnant women actually remember.

And those are two completely different things.

Being the Best Doula Doesn’t Automatically Make You Visible

One of the most damaging beliefs I see in the doula industry is the idea that success belongs to the most qualified person in the room.

But if that were true, there would be thousands of wildly successful doulas making multiple six figures simply because they have the most certifications, the longest résumé, or the best outcomes.

That’s not what I’m seeing at all.

What I’m seeing is incredibly talented doulas barely getting inquiries… while other doulas with less experience are becoming memorable, referred constantly, and booked out.

Because visibility and memorability are not the same thing as skill.

And in today’s online world?

Memorability matters.

I Think the Doula Industry Has an Optimization Addiction

I swear some doulas spend their entire business trying to become more impressive on paper.

Another certification.

Another training.

Another website tweak.

Another freebie.

More letters after their name.

And listen — I love education.

I’m not anti-certification at all.

But I do think there comes a point where “becoming better” is actually just emotionally safer than becoming visible.

Because improving feels productive.

But visibility feels vulnerable.

Perfecting your website feels safer than posting a strong opinion online.

Reworking your curriculum for the nineteenth time feels safer than saying something that might actually polarize people.

And I think a lot of doulas are secretly hoping credentials will compensate for a lack of identity.

But people don’t remember credentials.

They remember PEOPLE.

Moms Hire the Doulas They Feel Connected To

Most pregnant women are not sitting there comparing doulas based on a credential checklist.

They’re choosing based on resonance.

Connection.

Trust.

Energy.

Perspective.

They’re asking themselves:

“Do I feel safe with her?”
“Do I align with her?”
“Can I see myself being supported by this person?”

Birth is emotional.

Motherhood is emotional.

Decision-making in pregnancy is emotional.

Which means your marketing cannot feel emotionally flat if you want mothers to remember you.

Why Most Doula Content Gets Ignored

Here’s the truth:

If your content sounds exactly like everybody else’s… your audience’s brain stops noticing you.

Not because your content is bad.

But because there’s no contrast.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in business is this:

Different creates emotional memory.

And emotional memory is what creates:

  • referrals

  • DMs

  • trust

  • conversions

  • inquiries

  • booked-out calendars

The doulas winning online right now are emotionally recognizable.

They have:

  • a point of view

  • personality

  • conviction

  • rhythm

  • energy

  • presence

You remember them.

My Own Biggest Branding Shift

Honestly, this lesson completely changed the trajectory of my life and business.

There was a season where I was deeply in student mode.

Watching mentors.

Studying them.

Absorbing everything.

And eventually I realized something huge:

The reason I started becoming successful was NOT because I was trying to become someone else.

It was because I stopped trying to replicate another woman’s identity… and started leaning harder into my own.

My intensity.

My emotional honesty.

My sarcasm.

My dance background.

My obsession with sales psychology.

My boldness.

My willingness to say things other people were too afraid to say.

That became the brand.

Not because I strategically manufactured a niche.

But because I stopped sanding myself down.

I Think Women Are Being Rewarded for Shrinking

And honestly?

I think this is especially hard for women in caregiving roles.

Because we’ve been conditioned to:

  • be agreeable

  • be digestible

  • be careful

  • not be “too much”

  • not make people uncomfortable

So many doulas are trying to build businesses while still being emotionally rewarded for shrinking.

But memorable women do not shrink.

And I’m not saying you need to become obnoxious.

I’m saying:
be fully expressed.

Because when someone is fully themselves?

You FEEL it.

You remember them.

The Question I Want You to Ask Yourself

If someone removed your name from your Instagram posts…

Would people still know it was you?

Or could your content belong to 50 other doulas in your city?

Because that’s the real issue for most doulas.

Not the algorithm.

Not hashtags.

Not posting frequency.

Your positioning.

Your clarity.

Your personality.

Your memorability.

Final Thoughts

The good news?

You do not need to become more polished or more perfect.

You need to become more unmistakably YOU.

Because in a sea of sameness…

different wins.

Every single time.

And your future clients cannot choose the version of you they cannot clearly see.
