You're a Doula Who's Spent More Money Than You've Made...
Stop Spending Money on the Wrong Things in Your Doula Business
If your doula business feels stuck…
If you’re constantly “working on your business” but not actually signing more clients…
If you’re spending money, posting consistently, tweaking things nonstop, and still not seeing predictable income…
This is probably going to hit a nerve.
Because most doulas are not stuck because they’re lazy.
They’re not stuck because they’re bad at birth work.
And they’re definitely not stuck because they “need to post more.”
They’re stuck because they keep investing in things that make them feel productive instead of things that actually improve conversion.
And honestly?
The doula industry rewards this behavior.
It praises endless preparation.
Endless certifications.
Endless tweaking.
Endless “building.”
Meanwhile, there are doulas with gorgeous brands, beautiful websites, perfectly curated Instagram feeds… making almost no money.
Because none of those things matter if you cannot confidently lead someone to a decision.
Your Website Is Not the Problem
A website can support a sale.
But most of the time?
It is not creating the sale.
And I see doulas hide behind websites constantly.
Rewriting their homepage for the fifteenth time.
Changing fonts.
Updating package descriptions.
Obsessing over colors.
Waiting until everything “looks professional enough” before they fully put themselves out there.
But your website does not fix unclear messaging.
It does not fix weak leadership on consultations.
It does not fix the fact that your ideal client still cannot clearly tell:
Why your support matters
Why she needs support now
Why she should trust you specifically
At some point, the website becomes avoidance disguised as productivity.
Your dream client is not sitting there thinking:
“Wow, this beige color palette changed my life.”
She’s wondering:
“Do I feel safe with her?”
“Does she understand me?”
“Will she actually help me feel calmer and more confident during birth?”
That’s what creates movement.
You Cannot Certify Your Way Out of a Sales Problem
This one makes people uncomfortable.
Because education feels honorable.
And as doulas, we genuinely care deeply about serving well.
But sometimes another certification is not actually about becoming better.
Sometimes it’s about hiding.
Hiding behind learning because selling feels vulnerable.
Hiding behind credentials because leadership feels scary.
Hiding behind “one more thing” before finally putting yourself out there boldly.
I see doulas constantly saying:
“Once I finish this training, I’ll feel confident.”
“Once I add this modality, my package will feel worth it.”
“Once I know more, I’ll finally be ready.”
But confidence is not built in a certification portal.
Confidence is built through reps.
Through conversations.
Through awkward consults.
Through hearing objections.
Through following up.
Through surviving uncomfortable moments and realizing:
“Oh. I can actually handle this.”
The doulas making consistent money are not always the most certified.
They’re often the ones willing to:
be visible,
lead conversations,
ask for the sale,
and keep showing up before they feel fully ready.
Funnels Are Not Magic
This one ruffles feathers every single time.
Because funnels sound sexy.
Automations.
Lead magnets.
Email sequences.
Passive income.
Landing pages.
Tags.
Triggers.
And listen — none of that is inherently bad.
But if you cannot convert a warm human manually yet…
Automating the process usually just automates the leak.
You do not need a 47-step funnel before you can confidently:
start conversations,
lead a consultation,
communicate value,
follow up,
and close clients.
Some doulas are building automated systems for sales processes that do not even work manually yet.
That’s backwards.
Your sales process should work human to human first.
Then you automate.
Not the other way around.
Looking Polished Is Not the Same as Being Persuasive
The branding addiction in this industry is real.
And again — branding matters.
Aesthetic matters.
Professionalism matters.
But not more than trust.
Not more than clarity.
Not more than emotional connection.
Because pregnant women are not hiring the “prettiest doula.”
They are hiring the doula who makes them feel:
understood,
emotionally safe,
grounded,
reassured,
and guided.
Your audience does not need another perfectly curated Canva graphic.
They need someone who can articulate what they’re feeling before they even know how to say it themselves.
That is authority.
That is persuasion.
That is what actually converts.
Networking Without Strategy Is Just Expensive Small Talk
Another hard truth?
Not all networking is productive.
A lot of doulas spend huge amounts of time:
grabbing coffee,
attending networking events,
meeting providers,
“collaborating,”
exchanging Instagram handles…
…and nothing actually comes from it.
Because vague networking creates vague results.
If you cannot clearly communicate:
who you help,
who they should refer to you,
why your support matters,
and how the referral process works…
then the relationship usually goes nowhere.
The most effective networking is strategic.
It’s intentional.
It’s specific.
It creates a clear bridge between your work and theirs.
Otherwise?
It’s just another thing keeping you busy while your business stays stagnant.
So What Should You Actually Invest In?
The answer is simpler than most people want it to be.
Invest closer to the point of conversion.
Meaning:
your messaging,
your positioning,
your sales skills,
your consultation leadership,
your follow-up process,
your confidence,
your ability to create trust and certainty.
Because those are the things that directly create clients.
Not more busy work.
Not more polishing.
Not more hiding behind preparation.
The highest ROI investment in your business is usually the thing that helps you confidently convert the leads already in front of you.
And if you’re reading this realizing:
“Damn… I’ve been spending money trying to feel ready instead of learning how to actually sell…”
That awareness matters.
Because you cannot fix a bottleneck you refuse to acknowledge.
That’s exactly why I created my Doula Revenue Bottleneck Assessment.
It helps you identify exactly where your business is leaking clients right now —
whether it’s your messaging, your consults, your follow-up, your positioning, or your visibility strategy.
Because most doulas do not need more random advice.
They need clarity.
